Name: Jared Graves

Years teaching: 19, 16 at Miles Grade level and subject:9-12 Math/ Dual Credit Fed/Tex Government for Angelo State

Hometown: Snyder & Lubbock, Texas

Describe your favorite teacher/Coach : My favorite teacher was my Senior AP English teacher, Mrs. Kingston.  She taught me research and writing skills that I have used my whole life.  My favorite coach was my Tennis Coach, Coach Yearwood.  He grew up in Jamaica and played professional tennis.  I learned so much about sportsmanship and competition from him.

Why did you choose Education?  I have always enjoyed learning.  Education has been a great career for me to share that with students.  I am proud to watch my students grow up and have their own careers. What is the best part of your job?  The best part of my job is working with students.  They make me laugh and not take life to seriously.

Favorite coaching moment?  I have so many here at Miles.  Some of my favorites were when Johanna Lange brought home the school’s first state championship medal in tennis in 2008.  I was fortunate to watch Sterling Hudson and Nathan Havlak win the first Regional AA Mixed Doubles Title when Texas added Mixed Doubles in 2006.  I was so proud of Cadyn Heinze for competing and bringing home a state medal in tennis just a few weeks after a family member was injured in a car accident.  It was neat to watch siblings Dawson and Bailey Halfmann win Regionals. I will never forget when Kyle and Travis Fischer made a unbelievable comeback at the state tournament after Travis broke his tooth during a match and when they beat Mason in the state semifinals.  Watching Clay Hudson and Victoria Gomez win the Regional Championship in 2017 was so much fun.  I will always remember when my daughter Katelynn and her doubles partner Halle Hudson came back from a set down to beat Crawford in the State Quarterfinals in 2019 to earn bronze medals.  I was able to help other kids earn state medals like Bryan Munn, Sarah West, Colton Cmerek, Sloan Riddle and Shelton Hohensee

What is unique about Miles ISD?  We have hardworking and kind students.  Most of our students care about education and strive to learn.  I am always proud to tell people that I teach for Miles ISD.

Advice to parents:  It is important to let your kids seek out their own interests in academics, sports, music, OAP, etc.  Miles is a great place for every student to discover their individual talents.

Favorite Quote:  Don't let yesterday use up too much of today. Will Rogers Favorite historical figure:  I enjoy reading about WWII history and have read many books over this time in history.  My grandfather fought in the Pacific from 1943-1945.  I am so thankful for the men and women who sacrificed so much for our country during that period in history.

Hobbies: I enjoy camping and going fishing with my kids.

Favorite way to relax:  I like to read and unplug from technology.

Ideal vacation:  My ideal vacation would be to go to the beach with my family in the Florida Keys.
