Name: Amanda Harrington

Years on staff: This is my Second year here at Miles ISD.

 Position: Special Education Teacher

 Hometown: Veribest, Texas

 Why did you choose education?

I always wanted to be three things growing up... a mom, a teacher and a coach.  Growing up I had an amazing Coach, David Low, who helped me grow not only in sports but also in life. I dreamed of making this same difference in someone else’s life that he made in mine. I hope that I am passing along some of those values to my students today!

 Briefly explain your job:

My job is to provide special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to student ability levelsto make them successful.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day for me includes teaching some students every subject and then having multiple students that I support for certain subjects throughout the day.

What does success look like for your students?

Success to me is pushing through and accomplishing the baby steps to achieve the things that are hard and difficult in your life. No one’s successes look the same.

What is unique about Miles ISD?

What makes Miles unique to me is that it feels like family! Everyone is Proud to be a Bulldog and supporting one another is what we are about!

 Advice to parents:

My advice to parent would be to let your child fail. Don’t fix every problem for them. Teach them that it is okay to fail as long as they don’t give up and continue to give it their all! Also, give your children Grace!

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy getting to know the students not just inside the school walls. Living in such a small community allows you to build relationships with the students that carry over into other aspects of their lives.

 What makes you hopeful?

What makes me hopeful is the forgiveness and love of a child. As a Mother I may not always do or say the right thing in the moment, but the love and forgiveness my children have for me gives me hope in knowing I might be doing something right after all.

Favorite Quote:  “Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead.” -  Louisa May Alcott

Favorite historical figure: Louisa May Alcott

 Hobbies:

Well with three kids there is not much time for this thing you call hobbies... but I love picking weeds, welding, throwing some clay on a potter’s wheel and Baking!

 Favorite fast food:

I love Thai food or just Asian food in general!

 Favorite holiday:

It’s a toss-up between Halloween and Thanksgiving.

 Ideal vacation:

My ideal vacation would involve the mountains, a lazy creek bed for fishing that eventually turned into rapid waters for some tube riding, hiking trails, campfires and maybe even some exotic big game hunting if I get to dream big and have no limits! Campfires and cooking out are a must! But let’s not get too crazy, I still want my indoor plumbing!! Haha!
